Case Study: Locker Trays
Case Introduction:
A common problem that our clients in the education and fitness industries face is the need for consistent maintenance of their lockers because of rust. This occurs due to wet shoes being placed into lockers leading to rust buildup within the base.
In order to reduce the amount of maintenance needed, our client reached out to request custom trays to trap the water building up at the bottom of the lockers. The client also requested that the trays allow shoes to fully dry when within the lockers. They needed an alternative to flat-bottomed trays that only protected the base of the lockers, while the shoes were still sitting in standing water.

To create a solution, the ShapeMaster team needed to create a locker tray that would raise the footwear from the area that collected water that also protected the lockers from damage.
ShapeMaster’s Design Process:
At ShapeMaster, we determined that if we added ridges that were a quarter inch tall it would be high enough to prevent the footwear from setting in water. Next, we designed the overall size of the trays to fit the lockers the clients had in their facilities. Because of the size and quantity of locker trays needed, we decided that the molds could be machined from a composite material instead of aluminum. This would keep the cost low for the customer while still providing them with the high-quality tray that they expect when working with our team.
The mold was programmed and then cut on a CNC milling machine. The molds were then mounted in a vacuum forming machine and the locker trays were formed, trimmed, and shipped to the clients.
Solution:
Because of ShapeMaster’s experience in designing and making trays, the locker trays were made quickly and at a low cost. The locker trays have significantly reduced problems created with wet shoes in lockers, saving the client time and money.
